What is the Amsterdam bakery/pastry radar?
At Pink Unicorn Coaching, we take joy seriously—especially when it comes to cake.
Six years of research have been combined into this guide, offering you an introduction to Amsterdam’s gems: a selection of pastry bakeries that never disappoint. This year a whole new category – plant-based – has been added. There are also nine newcomers on the radar – give them a warm welcome.
The 28 pastry shops in this guide are divided into six categories, allowing you to pick the one that best matches your mood and gastronomic preferences. For each bakery, you’ll find the name, address, description, and a personal recommendation to help you make an informed choice for your next weekend adventure.
This research is unsponsored and entirely subjective. Submit your favourites to see them in the next edition!

Classic comfort
De Bakkerswinkel A cozy bakery chain in Amsterdam and The Hague offering an excellent afternoon tea experience with scones, clotted cream, and jams. Their selection of baked goods, such as carrot cake, walnut caramel cake, chocolate cake, and quiches, delivers familiar, delicate and satisfying flavours. Selections may vary by location, but you’ll often find me in Oud Zuid. Personal recommendation: Lemon and poppyseed scone Address:
Blommestein A renowned bakery specializing in traditional Dutch treats. Their tompouce, apple pie, and hazelnut schuimpunt are delicious and far from the supermarket variety. They also offer frozen cakes and treats if you'd like to save some for later. Personal recommendation: Cheese & hazelnut cookie Address:
Kwekkerboom Another renowned bakery chain offering traditional Dutch and European-style baked goods. They go beyond the classics, also featuring fruity options like cassis and mango, as well as vegan choices. Don’t skip the savoury goods! Personal recommendation: Carrot cake Address: Buikslotermeerplein 152, Ferdinand Bolstraat 119; Land van Cocagneplein 5
Huize Van Wely If you’re looking for something fancy, try this royal court supplier. They offer exquisite cakes, cookies, ice creams, and bonbons. Their product line is highly refined yet delivers bright and clear taste. I even used one of their regular options as my wedding cake. Personal recommendation: Matcha ice-cream Address: Beethovenstraat 72; Gelderlandplein 173 – also snatch a yuzu roll from Shilla next door
De Drie Graefjes A different kind of comfort—an American-style bakery! Cupcakes and cakes with joyful designs and a generous amount of frosting. Their red velvet cake is legendary—I heard about it within two months of moving to the Netherlands. Personal recommendation: Red velvetc Address:
French at heart
Esthetique Are you familiar with Cedric Grolet? This is the closest thing you’ll find in Amsterdam. Though it is unfair to compare because their treats are absolutely delicious, complex and beautiful in their own right. A delicate blueberry and lavender treat shaped like a berry? A perfect choux with weightless vanilla filling? That’s what they’re about. Personal recommendation: Raspberry-rose croissant Address:
Tout An elegant and inventive bakery offering a wide selection of macarons, entremets, desserts, bonbons, and madeleines. Their recipes are exceptionally well-balanced, their flavours anything but boring, and even their vanilla is extra "vanillary." The cakes are always a hit, and a box of macarons makes an excellent gift—at least for me. Please, just give them all to me. Personal recommendation: Argan oil macaron & Caramel Noisette dessert/cake Address: Maasstraat 77
Le fournil de Sebastian A French artisanal bakery devoted to traditional baking methods. Their tarts are stunning, the Pavlova is light and delicate, and the bread is both nourishing and aromatic. I’ve heard great things about their sandwiches but have never been fast enough to grab one before they sell out. Personal recommendation: Tart citron Address:
brioche. An outstanding bakery with its own unique style. As you might guess, they specialize in brioches with delicious filling, unless you go for the plain nature one. They even offered a brioche with the classic Lyon rose praline! Their bread and sandwiches are fantastic as well. Personal recommendation: Brioche of the month Address:
Petit Gateau This bakery is a treasure trove of bite-sized sweet delights. Mini tarts, madeleines, quiches, macarons, and éclairs—you can easily enjoy the equivalent of two standard-sized tarts in a variety of mini treats without repeating a flavour. It’s an amazing opportunity to sample a little bit of everything! Personal recommendation: Raspberry pistachio mini tart Address:
Patisserie Linnick A bakery conveniently located near Vondelpark, offering intricate multi-layered desserts and entremets. They also feature macarons, bonbons, and jams, and in the summer, they serve ice cream macarons—perfect for a stroll in the park. Personal recommendation: Yuzu and strawberry ice-cream macaron Address:
Flaky delight
louf Famous for their sourdough they also make flaky savoury and sweet flaky treats. For this sweet report, I’d like to shine the spotlight on their inventive savoury Danishes—with omelette, cheese, and all the best things in the world. Personal recommendation: Cheese and mustard croissant / Danishes specials Address: Bilderdijkstraat 38, Nicolaas Berchemstraat 4, Gillis van Ledenberchstr 74, Wittenkade 96
Et Claire Et Claire specializes in viennoiserie, and I can only imagine the amount of butter they go through in a week. Both their sweet and savoury items are exquisite. They go beyond typical flavours, incorporating ingredients like miso, za'atar, and kimchi. For a long time, I was a fan of their parmesan and rosemary twist, but, alas, it’s no longer on the menu. Personal recommendation: Crème Brûlée Round Address:
Fort Negen They are in a league of their own. If I had to name a single bakery in Amsterdam that everyone must visit—it’s this one. Imaginative, flavorful, and fragrant, they brighten my day every time I go there. Personal recommendation: Cruffins – assortment is constantly changing Address:
Grammes Known for their strikingly graphic laminated croissants that look like they belong on a Vogue cover. They take their craft seriously, offering a limited selection of goods that are exceptionally well-made. One of the rare places in Amsterdam where you can find kouign-amann (another one is Ulmus). Personal recommendation: Kouign Amann and Macadamia & dulcey chocolate Escargot Address:
Taste & Travel
KikiBoba They offer Taiwanese boba tea and treats in a minimal setting. Their signature baked snack is the Taiwanese wheel cake: two light, crispy waffles with a generous amount of filling in between. The waffles are made on-site, and the fillings can be sweet or savoury. Just note—sweet treats here fall firmly into the not-too-sweet category. Personal recommendation: Taiwanese wheel cake - I am a matcha gal, but you do you. Address: Van Woustraat 21A
Bini A delightful Asian bakery serving all things matcha, ube and black sesame. Chewy and light rice donuts, cookies with cream, impressive cheesecake portions – everyone can find something for themselves. When it comes to savoury, they serve Shio pan and sausage bread. I cried some salty nostalgia tears over the latter. Personal recommendation: Ube mochi donut Address:
Brittons A Canadian-American bakery offering an excellent selection of sweet and savoury goods that feel like a warm hug. They gained some attention on Instagram for their cinnamon buns, which are fragrant, soft, and delightfully sticky. However, the true treasures here are their cheese scones. Personal recommendation: Breakfast Bun Address:
Almond Bakery As an Eastern European, this is where I get my birthday cakes. It’s also where I go when I feel homesick—I’ll grab a sour cream or honey half-cake and try to eat it alone, but I can never protect it from others. Tasty, deceptively simple, and not too sweet. Pure joy. Personal recommendation: Chocolate cherry cake Address:
Amsterdam baking company Despite the Dutch-sounding name, they offer Argentinian pastries and empanadas. Alfajores, pan dulce, medialunas—everything is delightful and delicious. This is a dulce de leche heaven. And don’t forget the empanadas! Personal recommendation: Alfajores de maicena Address:
Plant-based
Saint-Jean A fully plant-based bakery that still manages to master puff pastry and brioche! A lovely spot for a specialty coffee and a delicious treat. Be prepared to queue, though—their cruffins are in high demand. They have opened a second place across the street - go there for savoury or when you are not prepared for long lines. Personal recommendation: Bergamot and Raspberry Pavlova, Cruffins Address:
Margo’s Vegan bakery serving inventive Danishes, selection of buns and airy and filling focaccias. The Danishes immediately grab attention with changing tastes – pear, baked vanilla, mango jelly, horchata. Still, I really enjoyed their buns – the complexity of dough itself creates and outstanding product. Personal recommendation: Tahini Bun Address:
Anook While not fully vegan, Anook tries to help everyone enjoy their sweet treat, no matter their dietary requirements. So here one can find a selection of gluten-free and vegan goods, including vegan donuts. They have cakes, buns, donuts, tarts, cupcakes, brownies – so everyone can find the treat of their choice there. Personal recommendation: Sticky pecan bun (vegan) / Tarts (not vegan) Address:
Less is more
Fermento Small bakery with Italian roots. They’ve just opened, and you need to RUN there. Preferably in the morning, because they are very much sold out in the afternoon. Quality ingredients – they bring hazelnuts from Piemonte. Family recipes – yes, from Nonna. A price-to-quality ratio you won’t find anywhere else in Amsterdam. Personal recommendation: Hazelnut tart, take two. Address:
BunBun Tiny place selling buns made from croissant dough with a selection of fillings. Simple idea with imaginative execution. They layer the flavours and textures – sweet, tangy, sift and crunchy, so it’s never boring. Personal recommendation: Strawberry and cream bun Address:
Les Petits Caneles They only bake Canelé – small French pastry with shiny caramelised crust and soft custardy center. Caneles are very hard to get right – this bakery does it at scale and with a lot of vanilla. They also introduce new flavours – matcha, coconut, rum, orange. Pick any and eat straight away. Personal recommendation: Classic Canelé Address:
Ulmus A small but well-respected bakery offering sourdough and an ever-changing selection of sweet treats. They feature an open kitchen, allowing you to watch how these beautiful creations are made. Their tea is also delightful and pairs perfectly with the sweets. Personal recommendation: Almond croissant Address:
Baking Lab A circular bakery, café, and educational lab all in one. Here, you’ll find sourdough and a selection of simple yet delicious treats. They even inspired me to make my own croissant pudding—though, to be honest, I rarely have leftover croissants. Personal recommendation: Famous raspberry and croissant pudding Address:
About Pink Unicorn
Pink Unicorn is a small coaching lab. I work with people to define their own roads at the intersection of their values, dreams, and careers. Sometimes we call destinations of these roads Pink Unicorns, because they are a bit out there, daring and naive, challenging and dreamy.
