Similarly to any other field, coaching is affected by AI developments, prompting experts to re-think its efficiency, commoditization, and the need for a human element. While it remains inherently human, AI coaching solutions are already present. Coaches are starting to use AI for better analysis, scheduling, and content creation. Around 10–15% of respondents in various surveys even say they’d prefer to be coached by AI rather than a human.

❓ Can AI replace human coaching right now? No, not yet.

‼️ Can AI provide some elements of what people expect from coaching? Yes—and you can definitely use a tool like ChatGPT to benefit from that.

Here’s a short “how-to” with suggested prompts you can use for some coaching-like exploration. Feel free to adapt and improve it. LLMs already do a decent job when you ask them to act like a coach, but they often miss key elements and tend to go with the flow. The prompts provided aim to cover the core elements of a session. You can add the next prompt to your response to keep things structured or focus on whatever has the most value for you at the moment.

𝐈𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐟:

📢 You have voice recognition or voice chat functionality.

🧠 The AI tool you’re using has some memory of you—e.g., through saved conversations or features like “Customize ChatGPT.”

This is not a substitute for a real coaching session. As in any helping profession, the setting does much of the heavy lifting. The whole ritual—taking time, investing resources, collaborating with another human, witnessing how they react, empathize, respond, and even make mistakes—is core. That part isn’t AI-able (yet).

𝐈𝐧 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫, 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐚 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐢𝐟:

💢 Your request isn’t clear. That’s normal—a coach can help you figure out where to start.

💎 Your experience is uncommon. Migration, neurodiversity, or difficult/confidential experiences—LLMs can handle context prompts, but they’re still more generic than a good specialist coach.

🫂 Your topic involves human relationships. In this case, a coach is your live learning and experimentation tool.

⛓️‍💥 You need to be challenged. LLMs are “yes-sayers.” A few prompts in the file address this, but a trained coach knows how to do it respectfully and naturally—without needing to be prompted.

Also, while working on this, I ended up creating a custom Pocket Coach GPT 🦄 with the settings above. You can test it out for reflection, goal setting or brainstorming. The link is here Please note that it’s unsupervised and meant for curiosity—not a real coaching session. Curious to hear how your experimenting goes!
